Maternity photography – Some Tips on Getting Great Photos

Maternity photography

Maternity photography is a fast emerging trend that has taken root over the last few years, used by women to document as well as celebrate this most wonderful period of their lives. As more and more women become comfortable with their bodies, one can expect this trend to only increase in popularity.

Inherent to the idea of maternity photography is a celebration of life, the human body, and the woman as the source and abode of a new life. Further, a woman’s body goes through remarkable changes during the 9-month pregnancy period, and pregnancy photography helps document these changes as they occur. Furthermore, in an age of single child families, a pregnancy becomes a one-off occurrence that will leave scant memories once it ends. Maternity photography is a good way to make these memories permanent and cherish them forever.

Maternity photography – DIY or professional?

Like any photography project, you can either do it yourself, or take the help of a professional photographer. The latter option, for obvious reasons, will give you better results. You can easily find many photographers who specialize in this niche.

When selecting a maternity photographer, you must try to find someone who knows his job intimately, has a lot of experience, and can make you comfortable in his presence. Understandably, many women have apprehensions about their body and the various changes taking place inside it, and may feel uncomfortable in the presence of a photographer. A true professional, however, should be able to put you at ease and give the best possible results.

Always consult the photographer’s previous work to get an idea of his aesthetics and style, and see if it matches yours. It is very easy to cross from tasteful to tasteless when it comes to pregnancy photography, and you obviously want to avoid the latter. Look for a photographer whose work exudes class, sophistication, and a celebration of the human body.

It is important to use the right kind of clothing when getting your photograph taken. Wear something light and thin to allow for maximum comfort, and maximum focus on the pregnant body. A thin robe, a large shirt, a light gown – these are all great options for a pregnancy photography shoot. Have a multitude of shots – some solo, some with your husband – in a variety of poses and angles to get the best results.

If you want to document the changes taking place in your body over the course of the pregnancy, it is advisable to get photographs taken every 8-12 weeks. This way, you can really have memories of all the body’s changes. Otherwise, can get just one set of photographs taken, preferably in the third trimester when the pregnant body can be highlighted. This, of course, is a personal decision.

Maternity photography is a wonderful new trend that celebrates the human body, and the creation of new life. Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful periods of a woman’s life that ought to be captured adequately in photos that will provide you with ever lasting memories.

  • Helped article for me, because i need this news. Thanks

  • Photography is more than just a hobby for many people, and can be a lucrative career. There are different areas of photography you can work in, with wedding photography as one of the most popular. Wedding photography can be incredibly stressful, as you get hired to capture memories for the most special day of a couple’s lives. They are not going to get this day back, and are expecting you to take beautiful pictures they can treasure forever.

  • maternity photography is a celebration of life,,,,,thanks for the post

  • Nice maternity pictures! It remains wonderful to take pictures of!

  • I think it is worth noting that if you choose to do it yourself, you are not going to benefit from a professional’s experience in terms of posing, skill with the camera, lighting etc. all thing that come with that path. So if people truly want beautiful images to treasure that is the route I would recommend (although I am biased! :) )
